A few years ago, my friend Ilina told me of her family’s tradition to pile into the car dressed in jammies with mugs of hot chocolate in search of the best Christmas lights in Raleigh. I can’t say I have found the definitive best but we definitely enjoyed taking a page from Ilina’s book last night.
We kept our comfy clothes on (no jammies and the boys were in shorts) and make our own special hot drinks: Chai Tea Latte for me, Hot Chocolate for Evan, and good ol’ coffee for Sean. We took our camera with us and tried to capture the houses that made us say wow. Whether it was traditional Christmas beauty or all out holiday tackiness, we wanted to bring you the best of our best.
This is one of my favorite houses in Raleigh every year for Christmas lights. Before it was popular, they lit up their entire yard with lights and corresponding music.
When it comes to Christmas lights, I’m definitely of the “more is better” mindset. Nothing is too Clark Griswold for me. Bright, colorful, elegant, tacky, original, traditional – anything goes for me at Christmas.
We kept our decorations simple this year since most of our holiday stuff is in storage. I did manage to hang my wreath, put up a few colored lights, and finally use my beloved Moravian star.
From my family to yours, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!

Hope you had a fantastic Christmas!!! Love the lights. I noticed this year that more houses are lit up around here than in years past. I love the lights. I am also obsessed with the house that is 6th up from the bottom of this post. So pretty!
Melissa – you see a lot of houses like that one around here. My very favorite house was not lit up the night we went out 🙁 Very traditional with white lights, wreaths on every window, candle in every window, live Christmas tree all lit up on the front porch. I keep saying next year is my Christmas!
