It’s amazing to me how many gadgets we have nowadays. I think back to when I was growing up and we lived pretty simply. There was a TV that required you to get up and move across the room to actually change the channel. There were telephones that required holding a heavy handset and actually staying corded to the telephone.
And coffee? Forget about driving to the nearest Starbucks and getting a half-caff skim soy double shot macchiato. (Actually, I have no idea if that make any sense. I only order a tall skim chai at Starbucks). Instead, we all owned a Mr. Coffee maker that required coffee filters, ground coffee, and water poured through the plastic grid at the top of the coffee maker.
Now? We have this fabulous thing called a Keurig that makes one perfect individual cup of coffee at a time. While my husband still grinds his own coffee and fills his own K-cup, it’s easy enough to buy a prepackaged plastic cup. Stick it in, pour some water, and within seconds a perfectly brewed cup is made.
In our house, this is what we need. I’m a tea drinker. I can’t stand the taste of coffee so if my husband had to make a fresh pot every morning, he’d be throwing most of it away (or drinking way too much of it!).
Other things change more by choice than by necessity. When it comes to reading, I swore I’d never give up the mighty paper book. Not only do I like the feel of a book in my hands but I like to be able to see how thick the book is and how much further I have to read. When I first tried an ebook, I took baby steps. I downloaded an app on my iPad and read a single book. It was fine. I didn’t hate it but it certainly wasn’t preferred.
Fast forward 3 1/2 years and I’m pretty much a Kindle girl. After joining a monthly book club, I found myself downloading books more and more from Amazon and reading on my Kindle Touch, Kindle Fire, Kindle app on my iPad, Kindle app on my iPhone, or listening to the synched audio version through Audible. Some people may say I’m too connected. I say I’m simply well-connected.
And finally, let’s talk about mixers. My grandmother used a big, heavy, stand mixer. It was so heavy that you might have needed help putting it on the counter. And once it got there, it wasn’t going anywhere. Mixing a meatloaf? Kneading some bread dough? Whipping some meringue? Change your attachment, flip a switch, and off you go.
Then, some wise guy decided it would be better to create a portable mixer and so I learned to bake with a handheld electric mixer while standing aside a mixing bowl hoping the ingredients would combine in just the right way, very soon.
Shortly after I got married, my husband scoffed at my portable mixer and fulfilled his dream of buying a KitchenAid stand mixer for our kitchen. After a few years, he even traded up for the KitchenAid professional chef series mixer. I may have scoffed at him at first but now, I spend most of the holidays flipping a switch on that mixer and walking away while my holiday baking gets a good start on the countertop.
It’s kind of nice to know that with all the advances in technology, some things never change.
How about you?
Keurig vs. old school pot of coffee?
Kindle vs. paperbook novel?
KitchenAid stand mixer vs. your mother’s portable mixer?
It’s okay if you’re not sure. I’m a nostalgic fool so I love the old and the new. But I’m lucky that I’ve had the chance to experience all of them. And if you haven’t, now is your chance to get started because…
