Instead of a standard review of Ralph Breaks the Internet, let’s go to all the questions that people actually on the internet are asking about what they are referring to as “Wreck-It Ralph 2.”
What is ‘Wreck-It Ralph 2’?
It’s a non-existent movie! But what most people are referring to is the sequel to Wreck-It Ralph which is called Ralph Breaks the Internet.
When is ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ out in theaters?
Now! Go! The U.S. theatrical release is November 21, 2018!
In fact, if you aren’t hosting Thanksgiving, you don’t have to worry about shopping, cooking, or cleaning like the rest of us. So go chill and see a movie. Or go on Thanksgiving. Or the day after. is wreck it
What is ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ about?
It’s six years later Ralph and Vanellope are the best of friends but Vanellope longs for something other than the same old video game routine. When the steering wheel on her arcade game breaks, she’s in danger of losing her home permanently. Ralph and Vanellope overhear a conversation about finding a new steering wheel on eBay and make a plan to launch themselves into the internet through the wifi (the router).
What ensues is an adventure into the best and worst of the internet.
Who is in ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’?
You’ll see glimpses of some of the original characters from Wreck-It Ralph, like Fix-It Felix and his wife Calhoun. But most of those characters are left behind as Ralph and Vanellope enter into a much broader world.
You’ll meet Shank, a hard-edged racer in the PC game ‘Slaughter Race’ (voiced by Gal Gadot). You’ll meet Knowsmore, a knowledgable search bot reminiscent of Ask Jeeves (fun fact: this character is voiced by Alan Tudyk who also voiced King Candy in the original movie). You’ll meet JP Spamly, proprietor of extremely annoying pop-up ads (voiced by Bill Hader in an uncredited role). And you’ll meet Yesss, voiced by Taraji P. Henson, who is the influencer behind viral hits on BuzzTube, presumably a YouTube-BuzzFeed mashup.
But if you’re a Disney geek, you’ll flip when Vanellope enters an online Disney space running into a variety of Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar characters (most with the original voice actors). But the real thrill is when she meets A-L-L the princesses and inspires them all to let their hair down. It’s a bit of a parody with Disney poking fun at itself.
How long is is ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’?
The movie runs 1 hour 54 minutes. For younger kids, that’s a looooong time. For adults, it’s also a long time. The story moves in so many different directions that you find yourself wondering if you’re at the climax (probably not) and how much more this movie is going to throw at you. I found myself a touch bored at times even checking my watch once.
Who is ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ good for?
This is a Disney that isn’t quite sure who its audience is. Younger kids might like it because it’s an animated featured. But it lacks the easy to follow storyline and eye candy of the first one, like the candy world in Sugar Rush. And it’s long for younger kids.
Older kids might like it if they have a general working knowledge of the internet. They’ll appreciate the references to Snapchat, Amazon, eBay, Twitter, YouTube, and more.
This movie really seems more targeted at adults – those who grew up on the internet and survived the dial-up era. You’ll love the references to AOL and Geocities (R.I.P.) and kids will have no clue what they’re looking at. It’s a bit nostalgic for the early days of the internet but adults will also appreciate the look inside the world of eBay and Amazon, among others. But the storyline isn’t enough to keep adults interested for two hours.
But if you’re a Disney movie lover, go see it. Because you probably will love it along with every other Disney movie. And it’s chock full of Disney characters using the original voice actors.
Should I stay until the end of the credits?
I talk a lot about “stingers” which are those little post-credit scenes that have become a phenomenon thanks to Marvel movies. You’ll get not just one but TWO stingers and they’re definitely worth staying until the very end.
What else can you tell me about ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’?
Sometimes it’s hard to say if a movie is good or bad. Sometimes I just talk about it for 60 seconds and my true thoughts come out. Here’s my 60 second movie review to help you decide if it’s the right movie for you.
