2021 vs. 2025.5 Volvo XC90: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

Last Updated on January 16, 2026 by Fadra Nally

You’re not seeing double – these are two different Volvo XC90s. How different? Well… that’s exactly what I wanted to find out.

I feel well-qualified to take on this challenge because I’ve been driving my very own Volvo XC90 since 2021. Here’s specifically what I’m comparing today: the one I own (a 2021 T8 Recharge Inscription Expression) and the shiny, new 2025.5 Volvo XC90 T8 AWD Ultra that Volvo graciously let me spend a week with.

Whether you’re shopping for a used XC90, thinking about finally treating yourself to a new one, or wondering whether upgrading is worth it, this is for you.

You can watch my full video comparison right here:

A Little Volvo History (Because I Love Context)

Volvo was founded in Sweden in 1927 and still proudly leans into Scandinavian design and sensibility. In 2010, the brand was acquired by Chinese automaker Geely – but don’t worry, Volvo still operates autonomously and the Swedish engineering we all know and love remains intact.

Especially for me. I bought my 2021 XC90 during the height of the pandemic, when car prices were climbing into orbit. Somehow I scored a pretty good deal, and at around $65k, it became my first luxury car.

Fast-forward four years. There are things I love… and things I definitely don’t. Which led me to the big question:

Is upgrading to the 2025.5 XC90 worth it?

My 2021 Volvo XC90 (aka Old Blue)

2021 Volvo XC90 interior

Old Blue is a plug-in hybrid, which was a huge selling point for me back in 2021.

What I Still Love

  • 20 miles of pure electric range
  • 27–31 mpg in hybrid mode
  • 400 hp + 472 lb-ft torque
  • Polestar optimization for better throttle response

It’s fast, it’s comfortable, and it’s been reliable for me. But it hasn’t aged perfectly.

Interior Layout

Mine has the 6-passenger configuration with two captain’s chairs and a third row.

Backseat feedback over the years:

  • Third row = great for kids, not amazing for adults
  • Rear AC can be a bit interpretive
  • The dog thinks it’s perfect

The Pain Points

These are the things that started to bug me over four years:

  • Wired Apple CarPlay with inconsistent connectivity
  • Vertical infotainment screen with wasted space
  • Wireless charging pad that rarely works
  • Odd gear shifter action requiring double taps
  • Weird drive mode selector
  • Door locks with a “sweet spot” I still haven’t found
  • Charging port door that always feels awkward

So the real question: did Volvo fix all of this?

Spoiler: Yes. Almost all of it.

First Look at the 2025.5 Volvo XC90

2025.5 Volvo XC90 exterior

The exterior hasn’t changed dramatically, which I love. It means your XC90 won’t look dated the minute a new model arrives.

Exterior Changes

  • Rear: nearly identical
  • Wheels: redesigned 21″ wheels vs my 20″
  • Front grille: more angular and modern
  • Optional “Dark” theme replacing chrome with glossy black

The biggest changes? Definitely indoors.

Inside the 2025.5 XC90: A Luxury Glow-Up

The model I tested was the Ultra trim—one level above the comparable Plus trim that matches my 2021.

Rear Seating

Same layout, but the captain’s chairs now have armrests. Not life-changing, but appreciated.

Front Seating & Cabin Design

This is where Volvo nailed it.

The interior is stunning—wood inlays, layered textiles, thoughtful accents. My sister (who does not care about cars) called it the most beautiful interior she’s ever seen.

Upgrades worth noting:

  • Crystal gear knob is now standard
  • Optional ventilated Nappa leather
  • Color options: charcoal, blond, or cardamom (my fave)
  • Ultra trim adds memory seats, cushion extensions, adjustable bolsters
  • Optional massaging seats with the Lounge Package
  • Charcoal steering wheel = hides dirt better (yay, real life)

If you splurge on the Bowers & Wilkins audio system, be aware the aluminum grilles are gorgeous… and surprisingly sharp. Also: $3,200.

Tech Improvements: Mostly Wins, One Frustration

11.2″ Center Touchscreen

  • Wireless connectivity
  • Android-based system
  • Still requires a cable for Apple CarPlay
  • Fully integrated Google Maps in the driver display
  • All ports are now USB-C
  • Wireless charging pad finally works flawlessly

The UI is much more intuitive and feels modern. Setup requires a Google account, but once done, it’s great.

Other Interior Tech Updates

  • Overhead controls now illuminate the entire cabin
  • Auto high beams have a luxury “curtain” sweep
  • Drive modes now use a simple click selector

Volvo: ✔️ Listening to users
My 2021 complaints: ✔️ Addressed

Driving the 2025.5 XC90

The moment you start driving, the difference is obvious.

Performance Improvements

  • 455 hp (+55)
  • 523 lb-ft torque (+51)
  • Smoother shifting
  • Much quieter cabin
  • Selectable regenerative braking levels
  • Pure electric range now 35 miles (vs 20 in mine)

The car feels more refined and more powerful while staying incredibly smooth.

Charging is simpler too, with a cleaner, easier-to-use port design.

A Few Things I Still Didn’t Love

No car is perfect.

1. Door Lock Sensor

Still touchy. Still feels like guesswork.

2. Air Suspension Upgrade ($1,800)

Yes, it’s smooth.
But long-term reliability? Historically questionable. I personally wouldn’t pay for it.

3. The Price

Luxury isn’t cheap.

  • XC90 Plug-in Hybrid starts around $77,495
  • Potential for $7,500 federal credit (check eligibility—it’s complicated)
  • Add premium audio, Lounge Package, Dark Theme… and you’re well into the 80s

So… Should You Upgrade?

Honestly?
If you’re already an XC90 person and you enjoy luxury SUVs…

Yes.
Volvo fixed nearly every annoyance and improved almost everything else.

The 2025.5 XC90 is:

  • smoother
  • quieter
  • more efficient
  • more intuitive
  • more luxurious
  • more powerful

Will I Upgrade?

Nope.
Because…

Mine is PAID FOR.
And I have a kid in college. So ask me again in four years.

Final Thoughts

The 2025.5 Volvo XC90 is a thoughtful, beautifully refreshed version of a car that was already good. If you’re thinking about buying new or upgrading your old XC90, I can confidently say this model is worth a test drive.
