Family Holiday Movies That Are STREAMING Good

Last Updated on September 18, 2024 by Fadra Nally

That’s meant to be a play on words in the title up there. Instead of SCREAMING good, I used STREAMING good. I realize that if I have to explain it, it probably isn’t a very good play on words but I needed to do it anyway. I’m just not cut out to do straight up post titles. If I did, it would read like this:

Netflix Has Some Good Holiday Movies for You and Your Kids

Boring. But that’s what I’m talking about here.

Streaming Good Holiday Movies

Quick background: When I moved last year, we made a decision to try to live without cable TV. Mainly, we were looking for the cost savings since the cable company GOUGES you. Am I right or am I right? So I reluctantly agreed to give up HGTV and Food Network and try life with streaming only.

Surprisingly, it works pretty well for us.

We have Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, and, of course, Netflix, among others.

We admittedly spend most of our time on Netflix. It’s a good selection of movies, TV shows, and original series. And I’m excited… I just discovered Once Upon A Time so that’s our new family series.

But this time of year, I tend to go into Christmas overload. If we’re listening to music, it must be Christmas music. If we’re doing activities on the weekend, it must be Christmas activities. And if we’re watching TV, it must be Christmas movies.

I mean don’t think I’m on overload but when I ask Evan if he wants to watch TV and he says, Okay but does it HAVE to be a Christmas show? I think I must be overdoing it.

Still, a boy needs his entertainment education.

But, Fadra, you say, we’re constantly on the road during the holidays. Who has the luxury of staying home and just watching TV? Well, me, for one. But if you’re traveling, Netflix streaming goes with you on your phone, your tablet, your laptop, or whatever other device exists that I don’t know about.

And now, I present you with a rather large selection of some of the titles available through Netflix streaming for the holidays (with commentary, of course).

  1. Mickey’s Magical Christmas
A nice collection of new characters mixed in with the classics showing a variety of old and new cartoon clips while everyone at Disney tries to put Donald Duck in the holiday spirit.
  2. Power Rangers Super Samurai: Stuck on Christmas
I’m sure I’ve seen this because I think I’ve seen all things Power Rangers. But I can’t say it stands out in my mind.
  3. Super WHY: ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas
Evan used to love Super WHY. I’m not sure if he’s too old for this…
  4. Lady Gaga and The Muppets Holiday Spectacular
Lady Gaga for Christmas? Haven’t seen it. Tell me if it’s worth watching.
  5. Dreamworks Holiday Classics
We usually watch 2 out of the 4 Christmas shorts. Evan loves the Madagascar Penguins and we all love Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon.
  6. Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tales
Not like the old, original Charlie Brown cartoons.
  7. I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown
Not like the old, original Charlie Brown cartoons.
  8. Thomas & Friends: Ultimate Christmas
No. We don’t do Thomas. Never have, never will.
  9. Kung Fu Panda: Holiday
I forgot about this one. We love this one!
  10. Phineas and Ferb: Christmas Vacation
Phineas and Ferb rock. Always and forever.
  11. Veggie Tales: A Story of Joyful Giving
We’re totally not into Veggie Tales either.

***

While we all tend to watch everything together, these movies might help hold your adult attention a little more.

The Polar Express
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Jingle All The Way
Christmas Vacation Vertical
Little Brother Big Trouble Vertical
The Search for Santa Paws Vertical
Santa Paws 2 Vertical
  1. The Polar Express
We’ve already watched this once this year. And even though the animation still freaks me out, the music makes me tear up. Every. Time.
  2. The Nightmare Before Christmas
I always thought of this as a Halloween movie. Should I watch it?
  3. Jingle All the Way
Evan’s never seen Ah-nold. Maybe this movie would be a nice introduction.
  4. Little Brother, Big Trouble
We’ve almost turned this one on so many times. I’m sure we’ll catch it before Christmas arrives,
  5. The Search for Santa Paws
I haven’t seen this one but dogs, Christmas, and Disney? WHAT AM I WAITING FOR?
  6. Santa Paws 2: The Santa Pups
    See above.

What about National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation?  You see it up there but there’s no link. I’m on the fence and I think Netflix probably is too (they provided me this list). We’ve certainly watched it this year and if you loved it when you were younger, you will STILL love it. But a word of caution… it’s PG-13 and while the s-word and f-word make brief appearances in the movie, it’s Clark’s encounter with the lingerie saleswoman and subsequent fantasy about her in the pool that caught the attention of my almost 7 year old boy.

I’d definitely keep it in the rotation but maybe wait until they’re a little older. Or make them go get the hot chocolate during those scenes.
