The Evolution of Chicken Noodle Soup

It’s that time of year. The time when the quaintness of the holidays have passed and the joy of the first snow has come and gone and ONE MORE POLAR VORTEX IS HEADED OUR WAY. It becomes the time when we are simply chilled to the bone and longing, even aching, for the warmth of some Spring sunshine.

Well, hang on, folks. It’s only January. We’ve got a ways to go.

(except for me because I’m heading to Florida next week where the temperatures are forecasted to be in the 80s.)

I know there are many of you out there that are like me. When exposed to prolonged periods of cold temperatures, you just cannot get warm. And when that happens, there are only three things to help cure the condition:

1. Take a hot bath. If it’s late at night, I’ve been known to take a hot foot bath because when my feet are warm, the rest of me feels cozy.

2. Lay in front of the fireplace. I’m lucky enough to have a house with a gas fireplace. I simply flip a switch on the wall and bask in the glow. But it’s not enough to sit by the fire. I actually have to lay on the floor with the fans blowing the heat onto me until I feel partially cooked.

3. Have a nice mug or bowl of something hot. I start my morning with a hot cup of tea. But usually for lunch, I have a nice bowl of hot soup. And since this isn’t a food blog, you know that my soup usually comes from a can.

I love Campbell’s soups (and I’m amazed at all the new “grown-up” choices they have) but for a good time, I almost always call Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup. And I’d like to take this opportunity to officially wish Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup a Happy 80th Birthday!

Yep. This best-selling soup (with sales of more than 250 million cans a year) is officially old. It was 1934 when Campbell introduced “Chicken with Noodles.” And despite the compelling ad, the soup enjoyed only moderate success.

Later that same year, sales took an upturn for a most unexpected reason.

An innocent misstatement on a popular radio program caused sales to sky-rocket. One of the famous on-air personalities misread his copy and accidentally called the product “Chicken Noodle” soup. Suddenly, Campbell started receiving large orders for their “new” product. The soup was formally renamed “Chicken Noodle” after the erroneous turn of phrase caused high demand for the soup.

And so the infamous Campbell’s Chicken Noodle soup was born (with a simple name change).

Touted a truly American meal dating back to colonial times, ads from the 1940s capitalized on our sense of patriotism (and you can see one of the cute Campbell’s kids making an appearance!).

In the 1950s, I think the Campbell Soup Company caught on to the fact that kids love soup. This kid probably couldn’t make it as The Wisest Kid but I think he could manage as The Cutest Kid.

When we entered the 1960s, kids were still cute but everything else was considered groovy, right down to this delicious, nutritious bowl of soup accompanied by the whitest white bread on the planet.

Yeah, that kind of looks like my entire childhood in that picture right there.

The soup continued on until the next major milestone, in my book. The POP TOP!

I almost feel like it’s all been done before so I’m hoping that if it ain’t broke, Campbell won’t fix it. For now, I’ll stock up my pantry to always keep something on hand for sick days, cold days, and any day I feel like I want soup.
