Eating breakfast with my family this morning and my husband stops to retrieve my binoculars. Knowing my husband, I’m assuming he sees some person walking within 10 feet of our property. Instead, he focuses on the River Birch situated right beside our deck.
Several years ago, we bought a hollowed out gourd at the NC State Farmer’s Market to be used as a bird house. We hung it high in our River Birch and just waited for a nice bird family to move in. And waited. And waited.
Then we learned that the larger the hole, the larger the bird. So the large hole in our gourd would only attract larger birds which would typically nest much higher in a tree than we could reach. Oh well. It still looked pretty.
And then…
I saw some bird activity over the last few weeks. I saw a brown bird go in and out of the gourd. Could he/she have been nesting? We could confirm anything for sure…until this morning.
We can now confirm that our backyard gourd is officially home to a family of Carolina Wrens. How can I be so sure? We saw little Wren Jr. poking his head out of the gourd as Mommy and Daddy went to retrieve delicious bugs.
Now, please enjoy our pictorial and have a very happy bird-day!

Love your site…the bird pictures are lovely!! I found your blog through The Lady Bloggers Society and thought I would drop by to say “Hi”. I have bookmarked your blog and will visit often.
I have only been blogging for a couple of months, but really like it.
OK, that is beyond lovely.
But I need to know . . . Does your husband have trouble seeing? Or does he just like to examine the individual fibers in the clothing of passers-by?
CONGRATULATIONS.
I get as giddy as a school girl when we get a new nest. We've had a Creeper nest inside our garage THREE times in the past 2 years. She lost her first brood and then I got to see the babes the second time around. This year I got to see her eggs but was perplexed to have missed the birth. I am praying that I just got busy and didn't notice.
This year we had a Starling build her nest in our Purple Martin Hotel. Whatever!
Enjoy your Wren. She will probably return next year now that she found a great spot.
Hi Allie – I'm so glad you stopped by. I get excited by the little things in life. I will have to check out your blog as well!
I could say that we have a HUGE estate and that's why he needs binoculars. But I'll just say he's very protective. Which is a good thing. And the birds are totally lovely.
We also had a nest of sparrows that came and went on our deck. And we had a whole nest of baby bunnies. We were so sad when they finally left their nest. And we have what I like to think is a lovely old couple of mourning doves in the Leyland Cypress trees beside the deck. Sorry about your starling. Boo.
