You know what’s great about the internet? I can pretty much put anything I want out there and there is always someone to encourage me or ridicule me. In today’s case, I expect a bit of both.
I haven’t done VlogMom in a while. It’s not that I don’t want to (although I seem to enjoy my own videos way more than anyone else – can you say low traffic?), it’s just that I haven’t had time. But I love doing the vlog prompts because it gets me in front of the camera without talking about products (although I try to make those fun too).
What got me filming this morning was Julie from Julieverse telling me my name was written all over this week’s prompt:
Entertain us! Play an instrument, sing, read a monologue, show off your entertainment talent…
I’ll be the first to admit that talent lies in the eyes of the beholder. But I’m well aware that singing and dancing are NOT my forte. I did, however, used to have some acting chops. So I dusted off my book of monologues, dug one out, and acted my heart out in front of my iPhone.
Let me set the stage and then feel free to ridicule or encourage.
Dramatic reading from “The Death of a Miner” by Paula Cizmar
Setting: A coal-mining town in Appalachia
Mary Alice Hager, a coal miner, has been killed in a mining accident. Her husband Jack and daughter Sallie struggle to come to terms with her death – an the law which denies survivors’ benefits to families of female workers. Interspersed with the family’s present-tense dramas are flashbacks of Mary Alice, vibrantly alive. Here she tells Jack, who has just proposed marriage, why she wants to work in the mine.
Now it’s your turn. What your hidden talent?
