Did you know that today is National Sunglasses Day? I’m not sure who decided it or what it really means but I’d guess it’s the time to stop and tell your sunglasses how much they really mean to you.
And they should mean a lot. You do have a pair, right? Or if you’re like me, you have several pairs. One for the car, one sitting it in the house, one sitting on your desk because you forgot they were on top of your head until you sat down to work, one buried in the bottom of your purse, and one that will always be eternally lost.
Regardless of your sunglasses problem enjoyment, you really only need one pair of good sunglasses and that good pair will ideally have polarized sun lenses, like mine. (This pair actually stays in the nice, neat case, along with a lens cloth, usually in my car).
And if you haven’t figured out why you not only need sunglasses but you need good sunglasses, I’ll give you (and show you) 5 reasons why.
1. They Keep the Sun Out of Your Eyes
Okay, this is your duh moment. Yes, that’s the obvious reason why we need sunglasses but wouldn’t any old sunglasses do? Nope. You need high quality lenses like Xperio UV because they not only shield your eyes from the sun but also from harmful UV rays.
94 percent of people don’t realize the sun can be just as harmful to their eyes as it is to their skin. Don’t be one of them
Fun fact: People with light colored eyes (like blue) tend to have a higher sensitivity to light and need good sunglasses.
2. They Might Help You Drive Better
While good sunglasses won’t help you make better driving decisions, they can help you see better. Even though I wear contact lenses (so I don’t have to wear prescription sunglasses), polarized lenses make my line of vision sharper and crisper. Plus, I’m not that annoying driver that has to hit her brakes as soon as the sun hits her eyes.
3. They Keep Out the Glare (but ONLY with the right lenses)
So this is the reason I think that polarized sun lenses made everything seem sharper. It’s because they protect your eyes from glare and harmful UV rays with maximum UV protection on both the front AND back of the sun lens. Proof positive: I was able to sit by the pool and work on my laptop in the bright sun.
Fun fact: Up to 50% of UV rays that reach the eyes come from reflection off the back surface of the lens which is why backside protection like that offered from Xperio UV is so amazing.
4. They Protect You From More Than Just the Sun
Want to see a picture of me right after I mowed the lawn on a 90 degree day? When I mow, I sweat a lot. But apparently that’s not enough to cool me down and keep my face from turning beat red. But I want to show you that when I mow, I always wear good sunglasses. Not only do they protect me from UV rays but they also offer physical protection from anything that might kick up while I’m mowing.
5. They’re the Perfect Fashion Accessory!
Maybe I’m weird but I often coordinate my sunglasses to my outfit or purpose. Sometimes I need brown. Sometimes I need black. Sometimes big lenses and sometimes small. But they always make you look cool and if you’re having a bad hair day, you can put them on top of your head and your hair instantly looks more put together (it’s a fact).
If you were looking for a good reason to treat yourself to a really nice pair of good sunglasses, I just gave you five. You’re welcome!

Nice summer article Fadra! I used to wear contacts and wear sunglasses back in the day but now I wear transitions glasses that automatically tint. Unfortunately when I find myself stuck in westbound traffic on the long island expressway the sun can be brutal and my glasses don’t tint ( I assume because of the UV rays protection built into car windshields ) that’s when I could use a pair of Essilor sunglasses! But if I find myself in the near future wearing contacts again I’ll remember that old wise saying: The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades!
Just keep in mind that these lenses are available for PRESCRIPTION glasses as well. They just happened to send me non-prescription. You know, if you ever want something other than transitions!
