Netflix is great at catering to kids. Not only do they offer a lot of great content to explore like Lab Rats, Goosebumps, Jessie, Ninjago, and current kids movies, but they also have a great line up of original programming.
Some of our favorites include Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events, Some Assembly Required, Trollhunters, and All Hail King Julien. And he’s seen them all ad nauseum. In fact, I’m pretty sure my son invented binge watching before it was a thing. He could watch hundreds of episodes of Pokémon on Netflix before I’d even gotten out of bed.
Netflix really focuses on the characters when it comes to Netflix Kids (you do know your kid can have a kids profile, right?).
And Netflix knows that these characters have practically become members of the household. We’ve even invited King Julien to a few of our New Year’s Eve parties. So it only makes sense to include them in our kids’ birthday celebrations too.
Netflix Offers Birthdays On-Demand for your Kids
Netflix is granting parents the ultimate birthday gift with the launch of 15 Birthdays On-Demand featurettes. Starring the characters in your kids’ favorite shows—like Beat Bugs, Barbie and Pokemon—your kids will feel like they’re singing just for them. To find them, simply head to Netflix and search for “birthday.”
Now, you can include Netflix as part of your birthday celebration (and I baked a cake to prove it!).
Parents Have Birthdays Too, Netflix
But what about parents? What about OUR birthdays? Doesn’t Netflix think we want to feel special on our special days?
So I have a few suggestions about how we’d like Netflix to help us celebrate.
Let’s start with the cake. First of all, we’re all on a permanent diet and constantly cutting out carbs and sugar. So we’ll skip the cake and go for bite-sized cupcakes. Probably just as many calories but we feel less guilty.
Let’s get rid of the cutesy cake decorations. I mean, I love AAARRRGGHH!!! from Trollhunters just as much as the next parent but I’d rather be greeted by Marty Byrde, Joyce Byers, Piper Chapman, Prairie Johnson, and Frank Underwood.
And would we just love to see birthday videos from those characters? I imagine it would go something like this.
Marty Byrde from Ozark:
Money is not peace of mind. Money’s not happiness. Money is, at its essence, that measure of a man’s choices.
I hope you make good choices today.
Joyce Byers from Stranger Things:
I don’t care if anyone believes me. I am not gonna stop looking for him until I find him and bring him home! I am going to bring him home!
… for your birthday.
Piper Chapman from Orange is the New Black:
We are not friends. I am not your safety blanket. I am NOT your new Meadow. And, I *definitely* don’t need your advice.
But try to have a happy birthday anyway.
Prairie Johnson from The OA:
They said it would be invisible. Like jumping into an invisible current that just carries you away.
But I didn’t really think the cupcakes were that good.
Frank Underwood from House of Cards:
There are two kinds of pain. The sort of pain that makes you strong, or useless pain. The sort of pain that’s only suffering. I have no patience for useless things…
like birthdays.
When I finished celebrating my fake birthday will all my favorite Netflix Original stars, I decided to sample a few of the cupcakes. Joyce Byers fell over so I picked her cupcake first. Then I offered one of the remaining cupcakes to my 10 year old son who glanced at the plate and promptly picked Frank Underwood.
“You picked Frank Underwood,” I said to him. “You can’t eat him unless you can tell me what show he’s from.”
He looked me coldly in the eyes and said, “House of Cards.” Frank would have been proud.
Whether you’re looking for an extra fun addition to your kid’s birthday morning or I’ve inspired you to throw your own adult-themed Netflix party, make sure you’ve got a strong internet connection and plenty of cake!
