This week’s Stream of Consciousness post is a little different. I attended the Type-A Parent conference for most of the week and had an amazing time meeting so many wonderful bloggers (some of which participate here on Sundays!). One of the wonderful sessions I attended was about overcoming Writer’s Block. The session was conducted by @PattiDigh who led some exercises to stretch our creativity.
I couldn’t help but think of these exercises as stream of consciousness posts. So I thought I would share one of them here with you.
Patti asked us to pull an object out of our bag/purse/tote that had special meaning to us. Then we had to examine the object and take 2 minutes to write about how this object could describe who we are as bloggers. Then we had to trade objects with our neighbor and use their object as the inspiration for describing who we are as bloggers.
My first object (selected by me) was LIPGLOSS! Specifically Savannah Bee Co. Beeswax Lip Tint. Here’s my description.
I love color. I’m full of shades of color. Sometimes soft. Sometimes shiny. A natural shade with just a hint of transparency. Not everything is rosy but just adding a little shine and sparkle can make it seem better.
(yes, it’s short. I had less than 2 minutes and was writing out in longhand!)
Then it was time to switch with another attendee.
I was lucky enough to be sitting next to our very own Jana. I’m happy to say that she is even more delightful in person and I loved hanging out with her.
The only problem with Jana is that she didn’t really have anything too personal in her bag so instead, she handed me this.
It was a challenge but I used this wrapper to describe myself:
I can be sweet and gooey. I can be nutty. I like to see the world as a delicious treat. Sometime the treat is gone and things get a little wrinkled but the aroma lingers on.

I love how you changed the candy wrapper to be about you. I’m going to have to remember this for a prompt when I’m stuck on what to write. 🙂
PS after seeing all your tweets I’m kinda sad that I didn’t go to Type A. Can’t do them all though. 🙁
If you have a budget for next year, you should definitely head to Type-A. (after you take your trip to Europe). You would LOVE it. I met one of your friends too!
What a fantastic idea. Love how people can make others think outside the box. As soon as I’m able, I’ll try this exercise.
I thought I was up late. 😉

Confession: I was falling asleep as I wrote this 🙂
I enjoyed that! Thanks for sharing!
Ha, I would have been bummed that I got just the Mr. Goodbar wrapper and not the actual candy! 🙂
Remember I’m not a big chocolate fan. Although I do like Mr. Goodbar…
This is timely…I only have spare moments here and there to write lately, and when I can actually sit down, I cannot get into the groove of things. So, writers block is my bestie right now, but the bestie that you know is going to talk about you the second you meet a cute boy.
Also, tell me more about that Savannah Bee Co. lip tint…I covet it.
You should absolutely covet my lip tint. I bought it when I made a quick trip to Savannah from the actual Savannah Bee Co. (I bought honey there too!). I don’t know what I’m going to do when it runs out. I either need to find it online or make another trip to Savannah!
I will try this exercise next week. I wrote my five before I read your five, fadra… and I like the concept!! happy writing, everyone!
I actually find writing exercises to be easier sometimes than just dumping my brain. Maybe my brain is just usually too overloaded!
I LOVED meeting you! And so glad you got to share writing about my Mr. Goodbar wrapper with me. Later on, I found a Mr. Goodbar WITH a Mr. Goodbar IN IT in the bottom of my bag. It’s a shame we didn’t know that THEN, right?
Jana – you are awesome. SO glad we got to spend some time together. I’m not actually a big chocolate fan so i was actually okay with just the wrapper. What I’m amazed at is how little writing I created when I do it longhand!!
That was cute….but I stuck with the regular idea because this was just the second week I remembered to do it and I was so excited. LOL
I’m excited that you were excited. And you can write about any ol’ thing. But it is fun to try some exercises once in a while. I dusted off old parts of my brain!
some sundays, i swear you’re a flippin’ psychic. my soc this week was super short and sweet and i’m battling writers’ block…again! thanks for the inspiration. i hope you had a wonderful type a!
Isn’t it weird? Some weeks, I definitely notice a bizarrely coincidental theme among the posts. Maybe our writing is becoming synchronized or something??
I think you did a great job with the foil wrapper. This also seemed like a fun exercise, one I might try every once in awhile.
We actually did quite a few exercises and I found that I *do* have some creativity locked away somewhere upstairs.
Great post! I’m glad you had a wonderful time at the conference.
I really liked this workshop too. I didn’t have anything too exciting so I chose a dollar as my thing. I mean who doesn’t like money right? And, I was handed a driver’s license (male). I loved how both things stretched my thinking. Nice incorporation of the conference into SOC.
Wow. I thought a Mr. Goodbar wrapper was hard. A male driver’s license? I’m in awe of your creative writing ability!
