I hate click baity titles so let me go ahead and answer the title question right away.

Will Bad Moms Christmas become a new holiday classic?

No. No, it will not.

Well, not unless you like lots of f-bombs and jokes about the male genitalia to ring in the holidays.

Before I go any further, I have a confession to make. I haven’t seen the original Bad Moms and there was only one reason why I didn’t: I just didn’t want to see it. I figured it would be a totally predictable, raunchier version of Moms’ Night Out (which is super squeaky clean compared to the movie I saw).

Then all my friends told me how much they loved it and how funny it was and I wondered if I was wrong. So when the opportunity arose to preview Bad Moms Christmas, I went in ready to (hopefully) laugh.

It turns out that I was pretty much right in my apprehension. This wasn’t really my kind of movie. Mainly because it was a totally predictable and raunchy movie. With that said, though, there are some highlights…

The acting is great.

With the returning trio of Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, and Kathryn Hahn all joined by their mothers played respectively by Christine Baranski, Cheryl Hines, and Susan Sarandon, you have a pretty good powerhouse of actresses. The older moms definitely eclipse the younger ones but chemistry among the pairs and trios definitely worked.

There are some laugh out loud moments.

Even though I’m a tough nut to crack when it comes to comedies, there were some stupid, silly, shocking laugh out loud moments. I’ll just say that watching the “Sexy Santa Contest” was one of them for me.

You may get a touch emotional.

As I’m watching one of the scenes between Mila Kunis and her mother, played by Christine Baranski, I found that my eyes started sweating a little. But only a little. So yes, there are a few heartwarming moments in between the dirty jokes.

So who is this movie for?

I’ll be the first to admit that most of the world doesn’t share my taste in movies (mine isn’t better – just different). However, the ladies behind us at the press screening grabbed us on the way out and told us to be sure to give this a great rating because it was so funny. That reminded me that just because I didn’t love it doesn’t mean a lot of you won’t.

This is a movies for women ONLY. Men are treated as bumbling idiots and eye candy (mostly). But do you have to be a mom to enjoy it? Absolutely not. This movie is more about the bad moms’ relationships with their moms. So if you’re a daughter, you’ll definitely find something to laugh about.

And suffice it to say, it’s rated R. So let’s keep the under 17 crowd out of this one.

One final note: I’ve never been a huge Susan Sarandon fan but I can only hope I look as amazing as she does in this movie. She’s 71 and looks AMAZING. Definitely my favorite character!

  1. I appreciate your review. I haven’t even seen previews for this one, but what I have seen looks exactly as you described – as a movie that I just wouldn’t enjoy. My idea of funny or comical is not what you described. 🙁 So, in other words, I’m right there with you. I don’t think this is my type of movie either.
