We never had a lot of money growing up so we didn’t have the luxury of taking “real” family vacations. Our version of vacation was usually a day trip to Kings Dominion, or a weekend trip to Williamsburg in a rented motorhome.
(Someday, I’ll have to write down some of my motorhome stories because they are doozies. I won’t even change the name to RV to make it sound nicer.)
While they weren’t dream vacations by any stretch, they were still thrilling to me nonetheless. I waited with extreme anticipation for vacation day to come and felt like it was a dream when I was actually there. In the park.
From what I recall, we generally walked the park together, as a family of (at the time) five. There was a lot of waiting for me and my sister while we went on the kiddie rides and more waiting while my sister and brother went on the bigger rides that I was too frightened to face.
My mom couldn’t do the rides that went around because they made her nauseous. And my dad couldn’t do roller coasters because he was afraid of heights.
Wimps.
Even worse was when my mother decided we needed to go on a boat ride, meaning a ride on the slowest boat ever built. Or she would decide it was time for a show.
Enjoying a nice relaxing ride on the People Mover in Tomorrowland
It was torture. We wanted our day to be filled with endless rides with seconds wasted only while waiting in line for the next ride. Instead, we were at the mercy of our parents.
And then I spent this past week at Disney in Orlando. And I became my mother.
I found myself wanting to take a water shuttle across the lake at Epcot. I noticed that I wanted more sitdown meals. I suggested shows and we watched short films.
Ah yes. A nice sitdown lunch at Mamma Mia’s in Hollywood Studios.
Still wanting to have fun and be a cool mom, I rode the big rides. Once.
I did Space Mountain and Star Tours and Test Track and Everest. And I felt nauseous. The boys (my husband and my son) wanted to go on again and I would oblige them by sitting down on a bench with the bags and hats and whatever else needed to be held.
When the boys hit Everest for the third time, I went on the Discovery Trail instead.
Sure, we closed down the parks every night but I could barely move and was thrilled when we saved the last day of our trip for the park that closed at 5pm. I was so ready for an early evening.
Then Evan begged us all to go to the pool. It wasn’t warm enough for me so I opted to go to the hot tub (which was too hot). I tried the pool and got in like a mom. Slowly. Swirling in the cool waters until it reached mid-thigh and I realized I had gone as far as I could go.
I walked out of the pool, wrapped myself in towels, and waved to the boys from a loungechair.
I’m the mom. I carry the stuff we need for the park in my purse. I make sure everyone has sunscreen and comfortable shoes. And I like slower rides, warmer water, and theme park shows.

For the record, I still goofed around. I danced in the park. I screamed on the roller coasters. I even took time for a little kung fu.

Ha, my wife and I were just discussing this the other day. JY’s only three months so no biggie yet, but neither of us are big ride fans. Heather gets nauseous really easily on motion rides; I’m just not all that interested.
Somebody’s gotta take the boy on thrill rides! It’s like a rite of passage! Maybe you can get the grandparents involved in that.
I got nauseous on Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin. That was a new low for me. I’ll be THRILLED to hold the sunscreen next time.
I think EVERYTHING made me nauseous this time. I’m wondering if there is a cure for motion sickness.
I totally embrace my momness on vacation. I carry ALL-THE-THINGS and I only ride the slow rides. But from where I sit, I have a great view of the fun being had and for me, that is fun.
I think my shoulders at least got a good workout. But I will say I did really well with all the essentials: band-aids, hand sanitizer, wet ones, water, sunscreen, chapstick, tissues, camera, maps, and then all the stuff no one else felt like carrying anymore (like hats and souvenirs!)
It looks like you had a wonderful trip! I tried to do a spinny ride the first time we went to Dollywood, and I thought I was going to have to go to the infirmary afterward.
I went on a wooden roller coaster in Hersheypark years ago and swear I came off with a mild concussion. Maybe that’s what started it all.
I am the mom AND the kid in Disney. It’s tiring. I carry everything and make sure everything is in my backpack. Sunscreen, snacks, drinks, sippy cups, the right stuffed Mickey Mouse, hats, a change of clothes, shoes…and then when we get to Hollywood Studios, I shove the backpack at my husband so I can go on Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror by myself. But I also love just taking a break on the People Mover, or sitting in the cool a/c on Carousel of Progress for 20 minutes. I want to go go go, but relax at the same time. And this is why I always need a vacation from my vacation after going to Disney World. 😉
Also, totally went to Kings Dominion when I was a kid!! I have family in Woodbridge, VA and we took a trip to Kings Dominion several times. That is where I learned I loved roller coasters! My older cousin dragged me on all of them.
We pretty much closed down the parks every night. The only ride I didn’t go on was Mission: Space because I knew it would make me nauseous. I mainly nixed going on rides for a second and third time. Once was enough for me!
I’ve done it all but Space Mountain and I love it! I am a kid and a mom and a thrill seeker and a wait in line to meet the characters for an hour girl and I’m okay with that. Now I need to go back and rock some Kung Fu moves like you!
You haven’t done Space Mountain? I usually will do all the rides at least once. And now I’m okay to sit out the repeat rides!
I always knew you would fill the shoes of mommie-hood beautifully from the time I first saw you hold Evan in the hospital. Tilt-A-Whirl, Tea Cups were my enemies! But I did enjoy some of the rides, i.e. Haunted Mansion and loved the flume rides and then relaxing in the AC for shows(we went in August). The greatest part of the experience was seeing all of you happy and sharing a memory.
Apparently, it’s not just me. Some of my neighbors were telling me they feel nauseous too on rides now that they are moms. We had to skip the Haunted Mansion this time (somebody was a little too scared and so we had to take the early exit). But we did get soaked on the River Rapids ride!
It looks like you had a wonderful time! I like the slower rides too.
I like the slower rides or the water rides! And then I enjoy a good sit on a bench 🙂
Yes, we had a great time!
“The Momness of Vacation” – A perfect description of what goes on in these parts too. Sigh.
I can handle sitting out on a few rides but my shoulders are still aching from carrying the mom bag around the parks every day!
