How do you say Gewürztraminer? If you’re German, there’s no doubt that you know exactly how to say that word. If you’re not German, you may not know how to say it and you might not even know what it is.
Well, I’ll tell you but first, let me tell you why I even care!
It’s wine time again. And it’s wine time with California Wine Club, affectionately known as my monthly wine surprise. With the California Wine Club, you can decide how many bottles you want to receive and how often, as well as your preference on red, white, or a mix of both types. Your box will then arrive with a selection from small California wineries.
I had been sampling the monthly Premier Club that included one bottle of red and one bottle of white. I’ve definitely made no secret that white wine is my preference. But I was quite surprised to find a Gewürztraminer in my box and had a couple of thoughts in my head.
1. How the heck do you actually say Gewürztraminer?
I tried to say it the right away in my video (see below). At least, I think it was the right way. Here’s how the internet says to pronounce it.
[ɡəˈvʏɐtstʁaˈmiːnɐ]
Um, what?
gə-ˈvu̇rt-ˌstra-mə-nər
Are those schwa e’s I see in there?
So instead I asked my good friends at Merriam Webster to tell me how to pronounce it and they told me it’s pronounced like this (which after watching my video below, you will realize is clearly WRONG).
Now that THAT’S out of the way…
2. Do I really want to drink Gewürztraminer?
I know gewürztraminer as more of a sweet, dessert wine.
Apparently, Merriam Webster disagreed with me again. (What is up with that?)
It said that this wine is “a light dry Alsatian white wine with a spicy bouquet.”
So I decided, it’s wine. I’ll drink. And here’s how it went down.
Gewürztraminer Wine Tasting!
Want a monthly surprise too? Sign up for the California Wine Club. It is a club. You get a box of wine every month. Deal with it. And if that isn’t your thing, you can still scratch someone off your holiday list by looking at a gift membership.
I’ll even guarantee your membership. If you sign up for California Wine Club and you are not completely satisfied with a bottle of wine that you receive, you can send it to me and I will drink it for you. Guaranteed.
Remember to enjoy this festive season and drink responsibly!!
Disclosure: I received a shipment from California Wine Club for my review. Yeah, that’s right. I was paid in wine. But the opinions are all my own.

Oh my gosh I love your writing! I’ve been rather lurky lately but I just had to let you know how much you brighten my day with your witty posts! 😉
Well, you just brightened my day with your comment. Lurkers are always welcome (and so are comments 🙂 ) Stop by any time!
Nice! And I actually do love Gewurztraminer. 🙂
I wouldn’t say LOVE but I definitely liked it. The first sip was the hardest for this diehard Chardonnay girl.
Seriously. I don’t care how you pronounce it as long as it tastes good.
Ain’t that the truth? When in doubt, just order “white wine.” It works.
I have this too! Now I know I can have it with the pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake tomorrow 😉
Oh, yum!! I just got my latest shipment in and I haven’t even opened the box so I’m having “surprise” wine tomorrow!
P.S. I LOOVE pumpkin cheesecake.
