Just 5 Things… My Favorite Christmas Songs

5-best-christmas-songs

A few weeks ago, I was doing a video challenge where I had to come up with and (gasp!) even sing my favorite Christmas song.

Well, I kind of cheated and sang along with my good buddy Michael BublĂ© to “Cold December Night” because it seems to be my favorite this season.

Afterwards, I realized that I really did have some favorites. Some are classics and some are off the beaten path but no matter what, I can’t help but sing along to these 5 favorite Christmas songs.

(I am embedding video where I can even though these aren’t really videos to make it easy to listen to these.)

1. It Snowed – Meaghan Smith

I don’t know how this song arrived in my iTunes account. Single of the Week perhaps? It doesn’t really matter, though, because I’ve fallen in love with this Canadian singer-songwriter’s voice. We also have her version of “Silver Bells” but this one is my favorite.

2. Baby It’s Cold Outside – Dean Martin

This song has been done and overdone if you ask me. While I like the country-ish version by Lady Antebellum, my very favorite version comes from 1959 compliments of Dean Martin. He was the original smooth dude and if anyone could convince you to stay for another cigarette and half a drink more, it was Dean.

3. Candy Cane Christmas – Darius Rucker

Darius Rucker from Hootie and the Blowfish? I must be joking. But I’m not. This was another freebie from iTunes and I just fell in love with it. So sweet and singable. I think this should be a new classic.

4. God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman – Barenaked Ladies with Sarah MacLachlan

These guys have been out of the spotlight for so long that I actually searched for Barefoot Naked Ladies. Yes, I forgot their name. But the star of this rendition really is Sarah MacLachlan. I’m definitely a sucker for harmonizing and she makes this song just perfect.

5. Christmas Day – Dido

You know Dido, right? I’ve always loved her music. I can’t remember how I stumbled across this one but it’s not your traditional Christmas song. It’s more like a story of longing at Christmas time.

I honestly thought I’d struggle to come up with 5 songs but now that I’ve done it, I’m thinking of others I wish I could mention. But I’ll stop now so you can share your favorite with me. And if you have an audio/video link, include it! I’d love to take a listen.

    • Amen. The newer versions take out the word “cigarette.” Not that I smoke but there’s just something so smooth and 50s about leaving it in. It’s a classic.

  1. I like all your songs, Megan sounds a little like Nora Jones. Great voice! Coming up with my list got a little out of hand for me! I loved listening to all the music!
