The Technogel pillow sounds like something that belongs in a space age movie set in the 1970s, imagining what the future of sleep might look like. But for me, the future is here as sleep becomes more valuable to me.
As we gracefully age, we notice that some things start to change. Some things start to loosen and sag. Some things just get worn out. Some things just need more support.
OKAY, WAIT A MINUTE. What did you think I was talking about? Certainly not any of my body parts (or yours, for that matter). I’m talking about our sleep chambers. Our mattresses and sheets and pillows. It affects our sleep and I need all the beauty rest I can get.
Getting a good night’s sleep
Seriously though, the older we get, the harder is can be to get a good night’s sleep. Our metabolism changes. Our hormones change. We may require less sleep but have difficulty getting restful sleep. Some nights, I’m wired and though I can usually fall asleep quickly I may toss and turn or wake up during the night. Sometimes I’m awake for a good hour before I can fall back to sleep. And other times, I wake up in a cold sweat which is a miserable feeling.
Ah, the joys and privileges of aging.
But I know the value of good, restful sleep. It’s why we own premium mattresses. It’s why I only buy 100% cotton sheets. It’s why we keep the temperature set at a cool 65 degrees at night. It’s why I finally took down the temporary shades in our master bedroom, painted, and put up real blinds after 3 1/2 years. (Turns out that not having the sun blaring on your face first thing in the morning actually helps you sleep in a little).
It’s true. I’ve read books and articles and feel like I know everything there is to know about sleeping. But all of those things weren’t enough for me to feel good in the morning.
Another aspect of aging is that I frequently wake up with random aches and pains. It’s usually a stuff muscle or a sore joint but sleeping on something the wrong way can plague you for the rest of the day (or days). And this is where my pillow comes in.
When asked to review the Technogel® Sleeping Pillow, I was certainly game. My current pillow which I love, is a mushy, polyester-fluff filled sack that is perfect for tucking under and around my head when I go to sleep at night. But one thing my beloved pillow made sure of was that I would wake with a neck ache every. single. morning.
Finding the right Technogel pillow
Before Technogel sent me a pillow to review, I looked at their website and realized that their pillows are designed for the type of sleeper you are: side, back, stomach; and your general body frame: large, medium, small or narrow. So I asked them to suggest something for a 5’3″ sometimes side and sometimes back sleeper.
The Deluxe pillow was recommended and described to me as “not the thinnest but still super comfy!” Turns out the recommendation was spot on. Their website describes the Deluxe as:
“A versatile option for small-to-medium built back or side sleepers, and those who may flip between the two (it’s OK even if you end up on your stomach sometimes)!”
That’s me. I start on my back, move to my side, and assume I vacillate back and forth between those positions all night. With my mushy pillow, I usually wake up with stiff shoulders and a sore neck. Now, some of that comes with aging and my inability to keep up my flexibility (yes, I need to get back on my yoga bandwagon). I can do a few stretches and headrolls but usually I’m bolting out of bed because I’m running late.
After sleeping on the Technogel for two months, I can honestly say that my neck feels looser with less muscle ache and soreness in my shoulders.
Finding the right pillow for you
Is this pillow for you? That depends. I think pillows are a very personal choice and I think there are a lot of people who agree with me, as evidenced by the travelers I see who carry their pillows with them on trips. But I do think many of us are sleeping on the wrong pillow.
If you haven’t before, take a look into spinal alignment and look at how you should be sleeping. For the most part, a rolled towel placed under your neck while sleeping on your back is all you need to properly align everything for a good night’s rest. But chances are, that’s not your pillow of choice.
Your head needs support when you sleep, no matter what position you sleep in, or else you will wake up with neck aches. And luckily, there are pillows designed for every type of sleeper. As for my Technogel, I can honestly say it’s given me some of the best nights of sleep I’ve had in a long time.
Technogel sent me the Deluxe pillow to review and I legitimately fell in love with it. Check out my affiliate link for pricing on Amazon for the Technogel® Deluxe Pillow that I have. It’s definitely an investment but one that will last for years. And also, can you really put a price on good sleep?
