You know that dead week between Christmas and New Year’s Day? It’s usually vacation time but it’s what I like to call Christmas Limbo. The excitement of the season is mostly over but it’s not yet time to pack it all away. And in my mind, it’s the perfect time to do a couple of things:
- Reflect on the holiday season – whether it’s a past Christmas or starting new traditions.
- Capture the beauty of the season – whether it’s video or photos. Make sure you have memories to look back on.
- Start thinking about doing it all over again. What would you do differently if you had to do 2017 all over again? How can you use that to make your 2018 even better?
With that in mind, I’d like to invite all of the writers, bloggers, YouTubers, and social media stars out there to join me in 5 Days of December – holiday writing prompts to inspire you to create! Hopefully your business obligations are done and it’s time to focus on family. But if you’re a content creator, it’s a great time to just create.
If you feel so inclined, please join me next week and I spend each day focusing on one topic to reflect, capture, share, and even have a little fun with your holiday season. If you choose to participate, please stop back everyday next week to link up your post (or video or story) for the day and let’s take time to support our community.
5 Days of December – Holiday Writing Prompts for Christmas Limbo
Monday, December 25th – The Best Christmas Ever
I won’t be writing on Christmas day and I imagine most people won’t be reading either. But during that limbo week, it would be nice to read about Christmases past. Do you have a favorite year? Maybe it was the first year your baby brother joined your family. Or maybe it was the year you got that Barbie Dreamhouse you always wanted. Or maybe it was the year your grandma taught you how to bake your favorite cookies – the ones you still make for your family every year.
Share it with us and if you don’t have pictures from that long lost Christmas, use your words to take us back with you.
Tuesday, December 26th – How I Spent My Christmas
Now is the time to share how Christmas 2017 went for you. For some, it may be a tough Christmas – the first year without a loved one. For others, it’s the first year they get to play Santa Claus with their new babies. For others (like me), it’s continuing the same traditions you enjoy every year. Share it with everyone.
Oh, and if you’re Jewish or you don’t celebrate Christmas, tell us how you spent your day. Maybe it was a big meal at a Chinese restaurant and a movie. I’d love to read it!
Wednesday, December 27th – Wordless Wednesday, Holiday Style
If we’re going old school, we’re not going to write anything on Wednesday. We’re just going to share our favorite pictures from the holiday season this year. Show us your Christmas tree or your menorah or your holiday dinner or the excitement on your kids’ faces when they opened that big gift they didn’t think they were going to get. Think of it like Instagram for your blog. Words optional!
Thursday, December 28th – Winter Break Fun
No matter what you celebrate, most schools are out (and many offices are closed) for winter break. Do you have anything fun planned? Have you been traveling? Did you see The Nutcracker? Are you sledding in mounds of snow? Are you sightseeing in a new city or hitting after Christmas sales? Tell us what fun you’re having or plan to have while the world slows down for just one week.
Friday, December 29th – Thoughts for the New Year
January is hard for me. I feel like I’ve made it through an entire year and Christmas is the reward for that. So when January approaches, it feels like I’m starting all over again. This is the time for me to get my head on straight and figure out how to approach the new year with motivation and excitement. Maybe you can teach me a thing or two!

If you don’t have time to write (or just want to take a break from writing), I hope you’ll still come back and share in how others are spending their holidays. But if you do have time to participate in some of these holiday writing prompts, I hope you’ll share each day in our linkup and visit those in the community that are writing along with us.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
