A wise friend once told me, many years ago, that the way to avoid disappointment on Mother’s Day is to tell your family exactly what you want and exactly what you need. As much as we’d like those around us to automatically know what we want, it almost never happens and you probably end up with just a wee bit of disappointment.
Ultimately, what most mothers want on that one designated day out of the year is, arguably, TIME.
It’s not that you need more time or less time. It’s that you want a little more freedom to spend time how you want. And how we choose to spend that time is what sets us apart as mothers on Mother’s Day.
Here are three Mother’s Day gifts for three different types of moms that will definitely make somebody happy (as long as you tell your family which mom you are!).
The Me Time Mom
This is definitely me. I need “me time” on a regular basis. Sometimes, it’s simply time at home. Alone. And if I’m not alone, I tell me family that I’m in my bubble. That doesn’t mean they can’t talk to me. It just means that they should proceed with caution because this introverted mother is probably a little overwhelmed.
And speaking of bubbles, there’s another great way to give mom some “me time.” Allow her to enjoy an at home spa day. Give her uninterrupted time in the bath (dare I say, bubble bath?). Light a candle. Bring her a glass of wine.
To go with your generous gift of time, you can give her a “Thank you, Mom” Candle from Homesick Candles. These candles were created to provide scents that take you back to a time or place (they even have a Maryland candle!) and the “Thank you, Mom” candle is a soy wax candle, 100% made in the USA, and designed to evoke memories of mom:
Freshly trimmed flowers on the kitchen table. Lingering wafts of your favorite perfume. The smell of breakfast sizzling on Sunday. A house made a home because of you.
And for the gift that keeps giving, you can clean out the wax when it’s nearing the end of its life, hand-wash the glass with soap and warm water, and as a new beer glass!
Bonus: Take 15% off your order with code babble (Valid between 4/1/19-5/31/19)
By the way, I really do take baths on a regular basis and believe strongly in the concept of an at-home spa day!
The More Time Mom
This one is definitely me, too. My husband always asks, “do you have a lot of work today/tonight/this weekend?” And my answer is always. Because if I don’t have a specific assignment to work on, I have to work on technical stuff. And if I’m satisfied with my computer time, there’s this thing called a house that still hasn’t figured out how to clean itself.
And the shopping and cooking and laundry. AND we’re a total partnership! I’m not like an old-fashioned housewife. These are just things that need to get done. So if I can cut just one thing from my responsibilities, it frees up my time for something that I’d probably really rather be doing.
How about a robot vacuum?
Wait, are we finally living in the era of The Jetsons? I mean, kind of. The Ecovacs Deebot 711 from Ecovacs is an actual robot vacuum. It has a voice (a ladies voice, of course) and syncs with Google Home and Amazon Echo and has remote control and wifi and a scheduler and… oh yeah. It actually vacuums!
You literally can push a button on your phone and have the Deebot run a program to vacuum your floors. Even if it’s just the crumbs that gather under your kitchen cabinets, it’s one less thing that you not only don’t have to do but you don’t even really have to think about it.
Plus, having clean floors just makes you feel better, am I right?
The Family Time Mom
Honestly, this is also me. Every year, I insist on spending the day with my family. They are the ones, after all, that helped make me a mom! In a way, it makes more sense for me to celebrate the joy my son brings me.
Wait, whoa – did I just get a little sappy there? Yep, I’m one of those moms too. Maybe it’s because we’re just back from vacation and we had such a good time that I’m ready to get away again.
That’s where a mountain escape from Woodloch Pines Resort comes in. It’s a four-season, family resort located in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. How about booking a few nights for mom and the family?
True story: I grew up in Maryland, now live in Maryland, travel to Pennsylvania all the time, and I STILL have never been to the Poconos.
Woodloch Pines is an all-inclusive Pocono resort which means we come and we chill. There’s golf, a spa, and over 30 activities every day, including forest bathing. I promise you that if I try forest bathing, I will tell you all about it.
And if family time isn’t exactly your thing, just book her the getaway and let her take her girlfriends. Sometimes moms need a different kind of family too.
So did you decide which kind of mom you are? If you’re the hard-to-please mom, just tell your family that you’d be satisfied with all three options!

I’m definitely a mix of all three as well! I’d be thrilled with any of these gifts!
