You’re probably way too young to remember the sounds of Ricky Nelson singing about going to a garden party. But anytime I’m invited to something that even remotely resembles a garden party, this theme song echoes through my head.
Ironically, the song isn’t so much about a garden party but about the price of fame. He sings,
So you can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.
And that’s the fashion advice I took for the garden party I attended last Saturday at Mrs. K’s Toll House. A few friends had invited me to join in a wedding shower celebration and it was absolutely the perfect location.
Mrs. K’s, as the name implies, was actually a toll house 80+ years ago when there used to be a fee to enter Washington, DC. Motorists were required to stop and pay the hefty toll of 2 cents before heading to the nation’s capital. Today you’ll still find a steady stream of cars outside but around the back, it feels like you’re escaping into the world of The Great Gatsby.
So for the occasion, I pulled out what I thought to be my best garden party outfit.
It’s a simple A-line dress from from Aventura Clothing. The Raelynn Dress is 52 cotton/48 polyester jersey burnout. But I’ll admit I don’t even really know what that means.
I can tell you it’s soft, lined, and is super comfortable. And looks pretty cute when paired when a jean jacket, if I do say so myself.
My only warning with this dress is that it’s not a large as some A-line dresses. It’s a little form-fitting. In other words, if you’re a spanx girl, you might still want to wear your spanx. I just try to suck it in when I’m posing for pictures like this one.
But what’s that you see in my hand? It’s a hat, of course. Who can attend a garden party without a hat?
In addition to the Raelynn Dress, I snagged the Mira Hat, also from Aventura Clothing. Sadly, the Mira Hat is no longer on the website which tells me I must have great taste because they must have sold out.
If you’re looking for your own fabulous hat for a garden party, I’d recommend the Sabine Hat, which is what IÂ almost ordered.
And finally, remember that line from Ricky Nelson. If you’re attending a garden party, wear what feels good and always put on a little side of sass.

That dress is so cute! But the hat… that makes it. 🙂
The only problem with hats is that they ruin my hair for the rest of the day!!
True….
Quite the belle …
I would LOVE to take you to this place next time you are in DC.
It all looks so great on you!
I am not too young and I love the reference! The hat looks amazing with the dress!
LOVE the dress with your shoes!
