I’m back to play with Capture the Everyday again. I’m a sucker for very specific assignments so I love Melissa’s photography meme. Check it out if you want to play along. Today’s theme: What’s on your nightstand?
YOU ASKED FOR IT…
(okay, I know you specifically didn’t ask for it but here goes)
I was really excited about this assignment. Then I wasn’t. How do you make a nightstand look interesting? And my nightstand is usually full of crap. Do I clean that up? Here’s what I decided.
My nightstand is every little piece of me. The pieces that wake up with me and the pieces that go to sleep with me. I left it untouched. I’ll tell you what you see.
My iHome clock. I use it mainly as an iPhone charger so I can always keep my beloved within arm’s reach. I bought the clock on clearance at TJMaxx for $29 and I know why. There’s a big dusty subwoofer you can’t see that doesn’t work. So I have to listen to my music in mostly treble tones. There’s also a little black remote control that came with it. I don’t really need that. Seriously. It’s not that hard to walk over to my clock.
You’ll also see a smattering of other remotes. One for the TV. One for the Apple TV. They bounce between my nightstand, my husband’s nightstand, and somewhere on the bed buried under the covers.
A balled up tissue. Am I the only one in the world with a light but constant drip from my nose? I always have one nearby. I should probably throw it away.
My Arnie. I miss him still but having that particular picture on my nightstand with his expressive eyes looking at me makes me feel like he’s still with me.
Two books I may never finish. I’m reading “Truth & Beauty” by Ann Patchett. I really like it. I just seem to spend more time on my phone or on the computer instead of with a book in my hand. The other is a book about a mountain climbing survival story. I haven’t started it yet but I love that kind of stuff.
A soapstone frog. I bought in Haiti. I wish I could say I was on a charitable rescue mission but I bought it for cheap from a market in Labadee, a cruise ship port-of-call more or less owned by Royal Caribbean.
A soapstone heart. Also from Haiti. My husband bought it from a free trade store in Raleigh for my son to give to me for Christmas. I always keep it on my nightstand and he hands it to me whenever he thinks I need an extra helping of love.
I love my lamp. It’s another TJMaxx find. Or Marshalls. I can never remember. I love it because the lampshade is rectangular.
Now for the photo…
It did take quite a few shots to get something interesting. I tried to play with angles and lighting. I love natural light so that was a must. And I ended up taking the shot from my bed. I realized that everything on the nightstand is geared towards me laying my bed. So that’s exactly how I got the shot. And now you know the view from my bed.
Although it doesn’t seem like a photo of your nightstand would be something you treasure, it’s something that’s a piece of you and will definitely change over time. That’s the beauty of the Capture the Everyday theme. It may not be significant now but it might be in the future!

Love getting a little peek into your life! 🙂 And the angle of the shot is so clever.
I know. I’ve checked everyone’s out already. I love it!
LOVE the shot. It makes sense because that’s what we see from our bed– so smart chica.
And I will usually have a halfway used tissue by my bed but by morning my paper-obsessed lab will usually steal it and eat it. Seriously.
Other notes: LOVE the picture in the background AND I really need a modern alarm clock like yours.
That was another TJMaxx/Marshalls find 🙂
Yours is another one that is a combination of utilitarian and whimsical. Man, I need to work on my nightstand. I really like the print on the wall , is that DIY?
I wish. That print came from Marshalls or one of those store!
Love the photo of the view from the bed. And I love TJMaxx … and Tuesday Morning too. What a fun assignment.
I love finding the one-of-a-kinds at those stores. My whole house is decorated that way!
Love the way you shot this.
I agree about the remote being useless.
Love the kitty pic too
that is all
Thank you.
I have nothing more to say.
Wow. Yours is so much more respectable than mine. I’m going to go hang my head in shame now.
I swear I didn’t clean up but this was mostly a good day. And you can’t see the wooden fish hanging from the lamp that my Chinese sister-in-law gave me. When you open it up, it has carved wood pictures of people doing, ahem, bedroom kind of things.
I love the angle and your lamp. Black is our main accessory color in our house and I LOVE your lamp. I think I may have to go stalk a TJ Maxx or Marshall’s near us and see if I can find my very own.
Now I’m trying to really think where I got those. I’m quite sure it was Marshalls. Or TJMaxx. It’s where I buy all my cool accessories.
I’ve been to Labadee, too! That’s the only part of Haiti I’ve ever seen. When were you there? Great shot, Another nightstand that makes me not want to share my own … but I will. 🙂
I went on a cruise in August/September of 2003. WOW. I can’t believe it was that long ago!
Love it! And three days ago I totally had a tissue or two.
I bloody love this – how personal and intimate is somebody’s bedside table? I like your iPod thingy, and your lamp, and your picture on the wall. That look on your puddy cat’s face is so adorable, sweetheart.
It’s all very Fadra-y.
XOXO
I think I might do this too ….
Apparently it’s quite personal. I was just thinking of writing a post about how easy it is for me to share intimate details of my life with perfect strangers and yet it can be so difficult in real life.
Ahhhhh Arnie!! I think I need to participate in Melissa’s meme next week! I love specific too!!
I miss that damn cat. Yeah, tell me to write and I might freeze up. Tell me exactly what to write about and I can knock it out in minutes.
That’s very cute.
It’s great how you’ve made something mundane into something interesting to look at. 🙂
Are you calling my nightstand mundane?
😉
Mine has a huge stack of books that I am completely neglecting at present. :O(
Don’t worry. Mine was the smallest stack in the lot. We ALL have stacks of unread books.
Enjoying the angle that you took the pic – very clever. I also love the picture of the cat 🙂
Love it! Your lighting and angle turned out beautifully 🙂 TJMaxx and Marshalls are amazing resources! Your room is proof that you can find beautiful things at great prices. I really like the painting hanging in the background, as well.
I briefly thought about particpating in this challenge but I thought the contents of my night stand might be inappropriate with all the various lubes, whips, chains, “back massager” and other paraphernalia .
